g'day according to the TSA who set the standards for all international flights world wide 3oz or small is required see link below, but flying from Santiago Chile to Brazil then onward from Sao Paulo to the USA this was not the case , I found the rules were quite different where it wasn't required to show my clear plastic containing my carry on liquids before flying [May 2007]
No, you cant bring big bottles of shampoo with you in your carry on bag, but you can bring them if you put it in your checked luggage (the ones that you have to check in at the ticket counter)

Yes, you can check in any size bottles you want, just don't go over the weight restriction for the check in!!
